2007-2008 Areas of Research
- Developing and field-employing regional air monitoring systems to aid growers for reducing fumigant air emissions near residential communities
- Studying the reduction of pesticide inputs, worker exposure, and drift through alternative sprayer technology: can modifying spray volume and adjuvant use minimize farm worker exposure?
- Employing a novel volatilization collection system (VCS) for evaluating the effectiveness of pheromone mating disruption technologies to control codling moth injury in apple orchards
- Seeking safer alternatives to current use insecticides for controlling burrowing shrimp, a major pest species adversely impacting oyster production in Willapa Bay, Washington
- Developing risk and communication assessments for alternative chemicals to control burrowing shrimp in Willapa Bay and Greys Harbor, Washington State
- Trace-level chemical evaluations in surface waters of new alternative chemistries to replace organophosphorus insecticide use for orchard production
- Measuring naturally occurring pesticides from green manure biofumigation treatments to control early die-off disease, a serious soil-borne pathogen affecting regional potato production
- Characterizing/isolating bioactive plant volatile emissions from insect herbivory that may prove useful in enhancing conservation biological control in cropping systems
- Evaluating the effectiveness of a non-pesticidal antibiotic to control fire blight, a major disease adversely impacting pear and apple orchard production
- Assaying various chemical control options for potato tuber moth, an economically important pest in large scale potato production
- Assessing organophosphorus insecticide concentrations in regional irrigation canals
- Trace-level chemical evaluations to evaluate of neurobehavioral effects from sub-lethal concentrations of pesticides in surface waters
